Time to think outside of the box, or rather the cube: The Whitney’s "David Smith: Cubes and Anarchy” exhibition opens today providing "a fresh look at the work of the great American sculptor and new insights into the artist’s career-long involvement with geometric forms.” Bringing together more than 60 sculptures, drawings, and paintings, as well as archival sketchbooks and photographs, the exhibit makes the case that what some art historians have viewed as a departure from his Surrealist and Expressionistic earlier work is actually a linear progression. Instead of presenting the geometric simplicity of his iconic masterpieces from the 1960s like "Cubi” and "Zig” as a change of direction, this installation sees them as "continuations of his long-standing explanation of geometric abstraction.” Either way, it’s hip to be square.
