THE RIGHT TO TEXT

September 30, 2011

Here’s one for debate: Do New Yorkers need to be able to text at all times? "Subway riders waiting on platforms [this past] Tuesday at three stations along West 14th Street and one station at West 23rd Street could make calls, send texts and check e-mail,” reports the New York Times’ City Room blog. "The [MTA’s] senior vice president for subways, Carmen Bianco, announced the new service at a media event held inside the Eighth Avenue station of the A, C, E and L: ‘We’re here to flip the switch on providing our customers with the latest convenience.’” For now the underground cellphone service is only available to AT&T and T-Mobile customers at four Chelsea stations (sorry, Verizon), but there are plans to expand the underground grid. Said one rider responding to concerns on the added noise potential, "I got the mariachi singers; I got the preachers; I got people supporting every cause in the world on the train,” he said. "So why would I care if I hear a conversation?”
