FASHION FAMILY FEUD

October 12, 2011

The spring 2013 scheduling conflict seems to be escalating after Milan’s Camera Nazionale della Moda announced late last week that it would show its members’ spring 2013 collections September 19-25—a span that would "essentially [cut] into two of New York’s planned days and completely [eclipse] London’s whole five-day schedule,” reports Fashionista.com. The CFDA responded with "an open letter to the fashion community [over the weekend],” explaining the conflict was a "misunderstanding” that could be resolved. The problem lies in an agreement the CFDA and BFC maintain was reached in 2008 that "the shows would always start in New York on the second Thursday in September, with subsequent cities showing in succession after that.” However, Milan’s Mario Boselli claims no such agreement ever existed. (Why the scheduling issue to begin with? Milan doesn’t want to slow down its production schedule and New York doesn’t want to run into Labor Day issues.) Fashionista.com sums up the four potential solutions as: Option 1, NY moves its shows back; option 2, London also moves back, option 3, Milan and France move their shows up five days later, or option 4, "everyone is stubborn and nothing changes, forcing editors and buyers to take sides” (this last one being the least likely, but most dramatic).
